Happy Holidays Layout

Happy Holidays Layout_Laurel Lane Crafts (3)

Today is Day 7 of the 12 Days of Christmas posts on Laurel Lane.

Tonight I’d like to share another layout made with the My Minds Eye 12 Days of Christmas Collection.  This is my last one from 2011 and tomorrow I’ll be showing you some other collections.

I’ve enjoyed using this collection for three of my 2011 layouts.  It’s worked perfectly with having a new baby girl who’s wearing pink clothes.

This layout is based on Two-Page sketch #1 by Allison Davis at Scrapbook Generation.  I’ve done this before in a Halloween layout and I was thrilled to use it again.

Tonight I started and completed a holiday layout (I’ll show you later this week) from Christmas 2010.  I am excited to have gotten a layout done on a week night.  Each page I do always makes me even more motivated to do the next.  This is such an addicting hobby!

My layout features 8 photos and my favorite part about this one is that three of them are 4×6 (even enlarged one to 5×7) and then the others are quite large too with the squares being 4×4.

Here’s the sketch:   I changed all the sizes of the photos except for the three 4x4s.  This sketch is so versatile!

Same Sketch Two Layouts

Merry Christmas Layout (17)

Today is Day 5 of the 12 Days of Christmas posts on Laurel Lane.

I’d like to share some special layouts today from Christmas Eve.  My scrapbooking buddy Michelle & I choose the same sketch and the same supplies for a layout.  We didn’t plan this and were surprised when we showed up at the scrapbook retreat weekend planning to do the same page.

We both love all of Allison Davis’ sketches so it wasn’t too surprising that we decided to use her Two-Page sketch #23 for our layouts.

As soon I realized we were dong the same layout  and using My Minds Eye 12 Days of Christmas Collection supplies we didn’t look at each others pages.  I  thought it would be fun to see which patterns and embellishments each of us choose to use and didn’t want to be influenced (subconsciously or consciously) by Michelle’s layout.

Michelle has graciously agreed to let me share her layout with you today so you can see our fun little dual project!  This sketch has 5 Christmas trees as the main embellishments.  We had to cut them out of the pattern paper.  Michelle cut out cute ornaments to hang from the biggest tree.  She used chipboard stars and brads on the top of the trees.  She’s added red embroidery floss to the tree to add a nice touch.

Merry & Bright_MS (3)

Only one of our trees ended up being the same pattern.  I too added some embroidery floss to the trees.  Used a white floss and stitched on the snowflake design.  For my other tree, I added the blue & white twine that came with the collection as a garland.  I first thought of using red floss but I didn’t have the right color red .  I was glad to find this unexpected blue & white floss color as my tree decoration.

Merry Christmas Layout (21)

The sketch has two 4×6 photos and then nine 3×3 photos for a total of 11 photos in one layout.  I love layouts that allow this many photos.  The hardest part for me is always narrowing down my photos to the number in the layout.  I take a lot of photos and then I am emotionally attached to all the people in the photos so it’s hard to reduce but it’s so worth it to create a clean balanced layout.

Merry & Bright_MS (2)

We only used two other of the same pattern papers on the main part of the layout, the diagonal stripe and the diamond (in my tree).  This 12 Days of Christmas collection has a ton of papers, it’s pretty awesome that you can customize the colors for your layout.

Merry Christmas Layout (10)

I added this little sentiment with a brad to the top of the page.  This was also part of the collection. I had to include this great photo of my sister with the cute felt owl she received in the ornament exchange.

Merry Christmas Layout (2)

I love the location that Michelle chose for her journaling.  It’s a good place not to detract from the beautiful trees.  We both picked the joy tag to put in the bottom right!

Merry & Bright_MS (5)

Thanks to Michelle for taking photos and letting me sharing them with everyone on Laurel Lane.  Also, we’d like to thank our favorite source of scrapbooking inspiration Allison Davis for the great sketch once again!  We are two of your BIGGEST fans!!

12 Days of Christmas Layout

12 Days of Christmas (3)

Hello! Today is Day 2 of the 12 Days of Christmas posts on Laurel Lane.

Tonight I’d like to share a one-page layout that will be the first page for my holiday 2011 layouts.  I do a separate Christmas album (with only holiday layouts) and I like to do a one-page layout to start the new year with photos that aren’t used in the other layouts.  In this one-pager I typically like to show the small details, decorations or try to capture something significant for our family.  This year was Gwen’s first Christmas (6 months old) and we had a wonderful time opening up some new ornaments from Crate & Barrel (I LOVE their holiday stuff).    It was so much fun to watch her explore the ornaments and try to put all of them in her mouth.    Chris loves to bake so it’s wonderful to remember all the sweet treats that he creates and these gingerbread men were so tasty!  We had fun decorating them.

My layout is based on an Allison Davis sketch from her new vol 2 one-page book.  I used 5 photos just like the sketch but did them in different sizes to fit my photos.  I also had to move the journaling block from the top right to the left side because of the arrangement of the photos.

12 Days of Christmas (1)

Here’s a close up of the stitching I added to the banner flags to help keep them down.  My sewing machine came back from the shop last night and I was so excited to have it working again!!  A few months ago it suddenly stopped working so I took it in to get fixed.  However, when I brought it home it didn’t work for me.  Took it back and turned out it was the foot pedal that had gone bad (I think they used their foot pedal to service it the first time).  I am so glad it’s fixed because I have a stack of layouts that I need to finish with some stitching.

12 Days of Christmas (7)

My favorite part about using the sewing machine is how it holds down the paper so well, you never have to worry about it shifting.

Celebration (3)

Hope you all have enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday week if you are in the US.  We enjoyed two wonderful thanksgiving dinners (luckily they were not on the same days).  Now it’s time to get the house ready for Christmas.  It’s so fun to see all of the holiday lights starting to appear all around town on the houses.

Today I’d like to share a page kit that I completed last month at the scrapbook retreat.  This kit is from Scrapbook Generation and is the Boy Crazy kit from earlier this year.  The kit comes with everything you need to make this layout (the paper, sketch and a photo of the completed layout).  This is a great way to get some layouts done quickly when you don’t have as much time as you’d like to plan layouts.   This kit has titles & embellishments that say “my boy.”  I decided to use this for a graduation celebration so made a new “celebration” title so that it would work for this event.

Here’s my layout:

Celebration (15)I love that this sketch incorporates so many photos, especially when the hero image is 5×7!  Getting 8 photos on one layout is great when you have a lot of photos from one setting.

Here’s the sketch:

Celebration (17)

I’d like to use this sketch again when I have beautiful pattern paper that I want to make sure get highlighted in the layout.

I love the chevrons in this My Mind’s Eye paper collection.   The bigger yellow pattern is very cool with the multi-colored smaller pattern.

Celebration (13)

Enjoy your Sunday.  I am trying to finish up some holidays layouts so that I can share them in December.  I’m thinking about “12 days of Christmas” set of posts to count down to Christmas.

Supplies:  Boy Crazy Page Kit from Scrapbook Generation, paper, decorative stickers-indie chic by My Mind’s Eye.  Nutmeg “History” Medallions Paper and Nutmeg “Family” Laurel Burst Paper. Spooky Night Layout

spooky halloween night (2)

Today I’d like to share a Halloween layout in preparation for tomorrow.  These photos were taken two years ago on Halloween night as my 2 1/2 year son and his friend did some of their first trick-or-treating to a few houses.   I’ve had this cute My Minds Eye paper pack in my closet for a while and was happy to get to break it out for this page.  How adorable are the sketched people on the patterned paper in their Halloween costumes?!

spooky halloween night (1) This layout is based on a sketch from Scrapbook Generation by Allison Davis (August Class Kit).  You can purchase this sketch and two others for just $1.29 (what a deal).     I pretty much followed the sketch exactly and it came together quite quickly.  I plan to use it again soon, would be great for a birthday layout too.

I love sketches with a lot of photos and this one is great because three of them are 4×6 vertical photos (full size). Then you get to have 6 other photos for a total of 9 in this layout.

This photo of little puppy Gavin and his grandmother is one of my favorites.  He loved this costume and wanted to be a puppy dog again last year too but it didn’t fit anymore.  The brown nose is my favorite part!

Sweet Baby Girl Layout

sweet baby girl (2)

This weekend I did a layout for the weekly sketch challenge at the Scrapbook Steals blog.

The interesting thing is that this is the FIRST layout I’ve done for baby Gwen (already 11 months old).  I am not planning to start her albums till the fall but I was inspired to do this layout and I didn’t think boy photos were going to go well with the colors here.

I made the layout first and then decided these would be great photos to use with this paper.  I  had just printed copies of these photos to give to family members for her upcoming birthday so I was thrilled to have them all ready to go.

All the supplies are from the Follow Your Heart collection by My Mind’s Eye (purchased from Scrapbook Steals). The subtle pink, green, ivory & peach are perfect for a baby girl layout.

Here’s the original sketch:

I liked this sketch because of the circles and the pennant pieces. I knew right away I’d have to extend it to a two page layout. I rarely do one page layouts because I have too many photos that I want to put on each layout. I have to make a concentrated effort to narrow down photos when preparing for a layout so they all don’t have 20 on them!   (not exactly but you get the point, editing is crucial for me)

I added buttons to the chipboard pieces and then cut strips of paper to put behind.    I threaded the twine through the buttons with a thick needle and also put a cute pink/white bow through the blue button.  This is my first time using twine.  Love it and can’t wait to use again.

  • Extended the layout to two pages
  • Tried to have the 1/2 & 1/4 circles hanging above/through the banner but it didn’t work.    I added some straight strips of paper to attach the hanging banner so that it would be grounded to the layout.
  • Carried pennant across both pages and changed the shape of the pieces.
  • I put a larger title where the journal block was placed.
  • Skipped journaling on this layout because all the room the photos take up. The large one is 5×7 & the other three are 4×6

I punched small holes in the top of the pennant pieces and then strung the twine through.  Glue dots worked perfectly to secure all the little pieces.  I considered adding buttons to some of the pennant pieces but then decided not to.  There’s a lot going on in the photos with the pearls, flower headbands & hats and I didn’t want to take away from the lovely photos (taken by our favorite photographer)

I am planning to do one more layout and then some cards with this beautiful Follow Your Heart line.   I have yet to use the shiny & colorful decorative brads that are  that will be GREAT on some cards.

Celebrate Your Day

Every time I purchase a birthday from the store I think “I should be making this card.”   In order to be able to make more birthday cards I’ve been searching for some happy birthday stamps.  I found some recently and decided to try them out.

It’s Pam’s birthday this week so her a personal birthday card with this new stamp set.    Happy Birthday Pammy!!

Inside:   simple stamp with “birthday wishes”  message

celebrate it's your day (6)_e

It was so simple to make! Only took a few minutes. I used leftover scrap paper from my scrap bag (thanks Michelle!). After making Pam’s card, I still had a lot of paper left so I made seven more “Celebrate It’s Your Day” cards. Now I’ll have some cards on hand for the many upcoming birthdays.

I used this Allison Davis sketch for the card (Card Sketch #8) found at Sketch Support.Card Sketch #8

  • decided to leave off the strip of paper since I was trying to keep it super simple.
  • used stamp for message & cut into circle shape
  • mounted message on top of circle scallop
  • rounded the bottom corners of the card since the cardstock was round

Supplies:   Pattern paper- Abbey Road by My Minds Eye, corner punch- We R Memory Keepers Crop-A-Dile, Flowers-Bazzil, Buttons & Brads-Misc, Stamps-JIllibean Birthday acrylic stamps, Circle Scallop Punch- 2.25 EK Success

Another variation-I think the version with the 3 patterned cardstock shapes looks better than alternating with solid/pattern (like below).
