7/14-One Month Old
Gwen is now already one month old! The first month has gone by very quickly which is a good thing but it’s also sad. I know that things are going to get easier as each month goes but it’s so sweet when they are this small and it’s hard to remember later. She’s a very sweet baby girl and we are so lucky to have her in our lives.
She’s gained almost a pound and is now 9 lb & 8 ounces (75%), 21 1/2 (75-90%) inches long (for some reason when we went to the dr. they got a different height measurement than we had in the hospital). Her head is now 15 inches (75-90%) in circumference. She’s doing well on growing and still fits into her two newborn outfits but not for long. Gavin was an ounce heavier than this at birth. Even though she’s a “big” baby she seems so small & tiny to us! I don’t think she eats as much as Gavin does so I imagine she’ll be growing a bit slower than his pace.
Here are a few questions I hear a lot: Does she sleep a lot? Yes, she has pretty much slept this entire last month. Wouldn’t you if you were growing 20% MOM?! (month over month) She is awake for 1-2 hours about once during the day but I feed her and then she goes right back to sleep. Luckily at night she always falls right back asleep after about 10 minutes, the only problem is when I fall asleep too so I wake up a bit later and put her back into bed. We aren’t on a “schedule” yet but I anticipate that happening over the next month. The nice part about no schedule and being able to sleep anywhere is that I’ve been able to do a lot this last month, just pop her in her car seat carrier or the Ergo and we can go out. She’s usually in bed for the night around 8-9 pm and then we get up around 7-9 am. Sometimes she just keeps sleeping longer and doesn’t get up till noon. You would think this gives me a lot of free time but it doesn’t because she’s eating every 2-3 hours. Often she needs me to rock her back to sleep or hold her close. I try to get in bed as soon as I can after her so that I’ll get a good chunk before waking up for the first time in the night. Having done this before, I know this is short-lived so that’s helping me get through it along with all the support from daddy & friends. What’s her personality like? It’s hard to say for sure but she seems to know what she wants and lets us know. She doesn’t cry very much but it is more than we experienced with Gavin. She responds very well to her mommys voice & touch but does like sleeping on other people with warm chests that have come to visit. She’s just started to really notice Gavin & daddy by voice and looks to see where they are in the room.
I took her first “monthly” photo in the brown chair with her owls Penny & Joy. We’ll take this photo each month and then at the end of the year I’ll do a scrapbook page that has all 12 photos on one page. It’s interesting to see how much they change in such a short time. This reminds me I should add a gallery of Gavin’s monthly photos & the page in his scrapbook (for an example). I got this great idea from Michelle (thanks!) and I am excited to continue the tradition with Gwen.
My favorite part is that she’s bigger than owl Penny but smaller than owl Joy. I’d guess that towards the end of her first year all three of them might not fit too well on the chair! I’ve also included a shot of a very helpful big brother who likes to sit in Gwen’s chair and feed his baby doll too. He’s using an airplane pillow that looks just like mommies bopee nursing pillow.
