Our baby boy is 3/4 of the way through his first year! It’s exciting but also scary how fast time goes. At his 9 month checkup last week, I asked the doctor if she could freeze him at this age so that we can enjoy this time a bit longer. 🙂
At his checkup, he weighed in at 21 pounds 4 ounces, he’s 30 1/2 inches tall and his head is 47 cm. His weight is 50-75%, height 95% and head 95%.
He’s gotten so much more active this month. He’s gotten faster with his crawling but still does the "commando" style. There’s a little bit of height between his things and the ground but he’s not fully up on his knees yet.
The first week of the new year he learned how to paint at daycare with miss Anna and brought home a painting of "new years fireworks." I was so excited to get my first baby art project sent home with him. He painted a few more times at daycare and so we picked up some finger paint so that we could do it at home. His friends from PEPS came over and we had a great time watching all the babies painting. One day, Larson & Noah came over and we put them in their diapers on the paper with the paint and they went to town creating their masterpieces. Luckily the paint is non-toxic and washes out very easily from clothing.
One of the biggest changes this month was Gavin stopping breastfeeding. I am fortunate to have made it this long with all the challenges that we encountered on the way but I really grew to love this part of being a mother. On New Year’s day he decided he was done and wanted to have bottles from here on out. I was surprised at how hard it was for me because he made the choice to stop and it wasn’t my decision. I didn’t expect it to happen this way but it’s one of the first signs of Gavin becoming independent.
While crawling he makes the cutest "ha, ha, ha" noises so that you know he’s coming along. He’s so happy to be able to get around on the carpet & hard wood floors. His favorite things are to check out the Roomba and push the buttons, then head over to Griffin & Drake’s water bowl. The funny thing is that these are Drake’s two favorite things too. Drake’s gotten really good at starting the Roomba with his noose, then following it around and pushing the buttons to make it start/stop. He likes to crawl over our legs and use them to push/pull himself up.
On the day he turned 9 months old (Wednesday 1/28) I went into his room that morning and he was standing in his crib for the first time. I was so surprised to see this and called Chris to take a look. Gavin was all smiles! He’s so proud of himself and loves that he can do it on his own. We lowered his crib immediately so that he won’t fall out when he does it again. He also pulled himself up onto Larson’s jungle toy the next day. He kept doing it over and over and luckily I got to see it before leaving for work that morning. It was very surprising to see him suddenly standing up on his own.
