Christmas Party Layout

Holiday Party (2)

Happy December!

Today is Day 1 of the Twelve Days of Christmas on Laurel Lane.  I am going to do 12 posts this month and thought it would be fun to have them all centered around the holidays with a winter theme.  We all know how busy things get during December so this is a good challenge to keep me doing fun crafts among all the hectic shopping and traffic.  Last month I finished up all my 2011 layouts so I have half of the pieces ready and just need to come up with some others to fill the rest of the days.  I hope I can do it!!

This is a two-page layout that’s based on a one page sketch.  As you know I like to extend one-pagers to both pages so this layout turned into a double page layout right away.  I was inspired to do this layout because in one of the examples they used on Sketch Support featured the Nordic Holiday line and I already had it sitting in my Christmas stash.

Here’s a copy of the original sketch:

Here’s my layout:    I changed the size of the photos so that I could get 7 photos in this layout.  My main photo is 4×6 and then the rest are all 3×4.    Since these photos are close ups of people it helped that I was able to resize them so that they weren’t huge on this layout.

I love the poinsettia chipboard shapes so I used them as the main embellishments for this layout.   They are also found on the pattern paper on the left side but since I didn’t continue that pattern across I could use them on the other patterns.

I just love the holiday greens found and merry reds found in this collection.  The flowers have some sparkle added to them as well to look beautiful on the page.

Holiday Party (3)

This pink glittery snowflake is my favorite from the collection.  I kept the center of the snowflake in the shape because I like the color of the paper.

I have some other fun layouts with this collection in the works and after looking at these photos I am wishing I could scrapbook right now!  Unfortunately, it will have to wait till later this week, hopefully Friday night after work I can get crafty!

Two Years Old Layout

Two Years Old (16)_a

This summer has been flying by and I can’t believe it’s already August.  It’s a good thing for people living in the Pacific Northwest as we are just now starting to have some sunny days and hopefully we’ll have a few weeks with lots of sunshine before summer is over.

We were out of town for two weekends in July (camping trip and Park City trip) and so my crafting time was nonexistent the last few weeks.  I’ve finally unpacked the suitcases and then worked on a layout this week.  I planned out this layout back in May after doing the flag cards (with this same paper) and was so excited to finally do it this week.

Two Years Old (4)_a

This layout is based on one-page sketch #19 found at Sketch Support (where you can download the .pdf with full details).   I extended it to a two page layout just like one of the design team members (great idea).

I had vertical photos instead of horizontal like the sketch so I had to adjust the photos to make them work across the two pages.  I used four 4×6 photos and then a three that I trimmed to be 6 inches tall.

Across the top I used my Sew Easy tool to punch a line of holes and then stitched with embroidery floss.

It was fun to cut all the strips into flags and then to add the colorful brads all across the layout.

I have some other fun projects that I’ve been working on this week and I can’t wait to share them with you soon!

I am a HUGE Sketch Support follower and have loved seeing Allison’s work since she was featured in Creating Keepsakes Magazine many years back.    Her sketches are great because they give you an outline to start your layout.  They save so much time with the planning process and you can jump right into creating your page.  I connect so much with her style because the photos are the main element, they tell a story and they show emotion.  A few years back I ordered all 5 of Sketches for Scrapbooking books and I use them all the time.

Back in April, I participated in the Sketch Support blog hop where you hopped around to all 20 of the deign team members blogs.   It was a lot of fun to learn more about the design team and their scrapbooking motivations.

I left comments on all their sites and I was excited to find out I won a copy of  One Page Sketch’s for Scrapbooking Vol 2 from Katrina Hunt’s super creative paper. scissors & glue blog.    Yay!!  This book was on my list as I don’t have the one page sketches or the card sketches.  If you are interested, you can order a copy of this book or any of the others  at the Scrapbook Generation site.

Katrina also sent me a huge supply of twinery twine, 14 different colors!  I didn’t have any twine yet and I am super excited to add it to my upcoming pages.    Another very exciting recent thing about Katrina is that she’s made the summer design team at Scrapbook Steals.  Congrats Katrina!!    As you may have noticed from my recent cards & layouts, I like to follow the Scrapbook Steals sketches & challenges.   There are a lot of fun things shared on their blog & great deals everyday for new scrapbook supplies.    I can’t wait to see what Katrina & the other talented ladies create for Scrapbook Steals

Speaking of Sketch Support, I finished this layout last night when Tara came over to scrapbook.  It’s based on Two-Page Sketch #18.

“Hold on Tight"

Hold on Tight (1)

I used paper & felt embellishments that are part of the City Park Collection by American Crafts.   Same supplies I used for the spring cards.

Here’s the sketch:

Variations:

  • Instead of adding detail & journaling box on the far right, I added two more photos.  I wanted to share one of daddy spinning Gavin and thought it was important to have a vertical view.
  • Changed the border and kept mine straight, this tree & flower park paper is super cute and it was perfect for one of our first days of spring this year
  • Underneath the 6×4 photo I used 3 vertical photos that are 2×3.
  • Since I had room to the left of the photos I added a 4 1/2 x 7 block of paper to frame the page and to use more of the great patterns.

Hold on Tight (7)

The felt embellishments in this line are so adorable!  The flower & hot air balloon are my favorite.    With stitching & buttons they are so beautiful.

Hold on Tight (3)

I have one or two more layouts I am going to do with other papers in this line and I’ll be all caught up with my Easter layouts.  This might be the first time I’ve done a layout w/in two months of the photos being taken, it’s fun to do super current events!

Thanks to Allison Davis for all the inspiration & positive presence you’ve played in my scrapbooking obsession.

Sweet Baby Girl Layout

sweet baby girl (2)

This weekend I did a layout for the weekly sketch challenge at the Scrapbook Steals blog.

The interesting thing is that this is the FIRST layout I’ve done for baby Gwen (already 11 months old).  I am not planning to start her albums till the fall but I was inspired to do this layout and I didn’t think boy photos were going to go well with the colors here.

I made the layout first and then decided these would be great photos to use with this paper.  I  had just printed copies of these photos to give to family members for her upcoming birthday so I was thrilled to have them all ready to go.

All the supplies are from the Follow Your Heart collection by My Mind’s Eye (purchased from Scrapbook Steals). The subtle pink, green, ivory & peach are perfect for a baby girl layout.

Here’s the original sketch:

I liked this sketch because of the circles and the pennant pieces. I knew right away I’d have to extend it to a two page layout. I rarely do one page layouts because I have too many photos that I want to put on each layout. I have to make a concentrated effort to narrow down photos when preparing for a layout so they all don’t have 20 on them!   (not exactly but you get the point, editing is crucial for me)

I added buttons to the chipboard pieces and then cut strips of paper to put behind.    I threaded the twine through the buttons with a thick needle and also put a cute pink/white bow through the blue button.  This is my first time using twine.  Love it and can’t wait to use again.

Variations:

  • Extended the layout to two pages
  • Tried to have the 1/2 & 1/4 circles hanging above/through the banner but it didn’t work.    I added some straight strips of paper to attach the hanging banner so that it would be grounded to the layout.
  • Carried pennant across both pages and changed the shape of the pieces.
  • I put a larger title where the journal block was placed.
  • Skipped journaling on this layout because all the room the photos take up. The large one is 5×7 & the other three are 4×6

I punched small holes in the top of the pennant pieces and then strung the twine through.  Glue dots worked perfectly to secure all the little pieces.  I considered adding buttons to some of the pennant pieces but then decided not to.  There’s a lot going on in the photos with the pearls, flower headbands & hats and I didn’t want to take away from the lovely photos (taken by our favorite photographer)

Supplies:  chipboard accents, twine, decorative buttons, pattern papers-My Mind’s Eye Follow Your Heart collection,  cardstock-Bazzil, black letter stickers-Making Memories, cardstock letter stickers-Thickers

I am planning to do one more layout and then some cards with this beautiful Follow Your Heart line.   I have yet to use the shiny & colorful decorative brads that are  that will be GREAT on some cards.
