Chevron Elephant Baby Shower

Chevron Elephant Baby Shower_Baby Hope (10)

Over the last month I’ve shared all of the handmade items for the chevron elephant baby shower and today I’d like to share the photos from the beautiful day.  I’m excited to finally find a moment to get this post out because I’ve wanted to write it for the last month.  We had the shower in early April and then there have been two birthdays (mine and my son’s fish birthday party) in my family since.  We still have one more coming up (Minnie Mouse party) in just another month so I am a busy as a little (crafter) bee these days to get ready for the next party.  Baby Hope will be arriving very soon and so it’s time to share these photos with the exited mommy, daddy & big brother.

Here’s the shower invitation in a frame sitting on the desert table.  Having the invitation on display is a new thing for me and it adds a nice touch to the décor to have it on display.  We hung the circle garland banner above the dessert table & also along the large windows that overlook the water.  We made them in three different heights to fit the various spaces.

Here’s the table of sweet delights.  I am really happy with how it turned out, I’ve never had such a fancy table arrangement and had fun taking all the photos.  I used a plastic table cloth from the party store, love how easy it was to make the table look polished and also very inexpensive.  Picked up the wooden stamps (spelling out HOPE) at Michael’s Craft store and thought they’d be perfect to put on display at the shower to announce the baby’s name.  I made the blue stand that the elephant is sitting on by gluing a vase & plate together and then spray painting it.  I’ll share some photos from that project later.  Having one serving piece that’s not white on the table makes the table look much more interesting.

The mother requested that we serve her favorite sweet delights.  The doughnuts are from old fashioned with pink frosting & sprinkles, from Top Pot.  They are the best ever old fashioned.  The cupcakes are raspberry macaroon & vanilla as I gave a sneak peek of the treats in the cupcake topper post.  You can see the food tent signs, cupcake toppers and water bottle labels that I shared earlier.  I am happy with how the toppers look in the cupcakes, my favorite part was making the blue chevron pattern as the third one in the set.

We planned a few light & fun games and so these three chevron plush elephants were perfect for the prizes!    I love how the two-toned red one matches the chevron pattern exactly from the invite.    I found these on Etsy from Kelsey Bang.  They are good sized plush (at 7×5) and perfect to sit on a bookshelf or bed.  I am thinking about getting for my little girl too.

Guests left notes with tips, wishes & advice for the expectant mother.  These notes can be put into a book with all the photos from the shower or even in the baby book.   I got the Wishing Tree idea from Elizabeth’s elephant shower that was featured on Hostess with the Mostess Blog.   Her yellow mod elephant shower was so cute and I loved all the details.   The baby game was also from this shower, she offers all of the paper pieces from her shower as a printable so you can recreate very easily.    I planned to hang the wishes from the tree too but it didn’t work because the branches on the tree weren’t as spread out as they would have needed to be.  Since the elephants were hanging from the tree it didn’t matter though.

Elephant Shower Welcome Sign - Laurel Lane Crafts

Day 4 of my spring break week from work…slept in and skipped boot camp so had to run on my own to make up for skipping class.  Went 1/2 mile longer on my run, it’s no substitute for the pushing that you get in class but I sure enjoyed getting to sleep till 7am.

I’d like to share a few more of the decorations made for the Chevron Elephant Baby Shower.  Most of these are small pieces but they are fun to make and give a little touch to personalize the shower.

Welcome signs are a great way to set theme/tone as the guests arrive to the shower or party.  Here’s the welcome sign that I made for the front door door.  I used the silhouette to design the inner white circle and to cut out all of the three circles.  The outer teal blue circle is 8 1/4 inches.  Next time I am going to experiment going bigger, if the door is large 12 inches should work.   With the silhouette software you can easily make the text wrapped to the circle shape.   I’ve used the same teal blue banner flag that you saw on the invite but this time it’s not cut out.

Elephant Shower Welcome Door Sign_Laurel Lane Crafts (2)

I had no idea how popular door signs were until I saw how much activity my Mickey Mouse Door Sign seen here gets on Pinterest.   I’ve been surprised that the door sign gets (I lifted the design completely from Etsy) the most pins from that party.    I love the extra texture brought to the piece from the ribbon.  Here’s what it looks like inside with natural lighting (it was very hard to photograph on the black door).

Elephant Shower Welcome Door Sign_Laurel Lane Crafts (1)

In order to save the expectant mommy some time, I made her a set of coordinating thank you cards to use for all the gifts she’ll be receiving.  Used the chevron pattern as a backdrop and then the same artisan shape from the silhouette store (rotated 180 degrees) that was the main part of the invitation.  This time I just printed the design (without cutting) for the cards.

Made some small note cards for people to write wishes for Tara and her new baby girl.  Got the wishing card idea from the Hostess with the Mostess Blog where they have an adorable yellow & gray elephant baby shower theme.  All the yellow & gray heart elephant shower elements shared from that shower can be downloaded & personalized to recreate your own shower.  If you are doing a gender neutral shower it’s a great find!   If I hadn’t been so set on using the chevron pattern I would have picked up the cute heart elephant pattern to use for this shower.

Chevron Elephant Baby Shower Wish Card - Laurel Lane Crafts

Used the same solid red chevron from the invite for all the signs & papers.   Also, leveraged the borders that you saw on the invite.  Once you create a pattern you can carry it through all the elements.   I didn’t use the pink/red/teal colored & white chevron patterns because I wanted these to stand out from the banner, water bottles & cupcake toppers.   These cards with wishes can be placed into an album or baby book to keep for baby to see one day.

Chevron Elephant Baby Shower Wish Card - Laurel Lane Crafts (2)

Made food tent cards to put out in front of all the sweet treats & hot drinks.  Used the 4 scalloped circle design to create the white part of the card.  Print it and cut it out with the silhouette and then popped it up on the red chevron card to add dimension.  This is the same scalloped circle that I used here to make a birthday banner.    I love that it can be used to create an oval shape as well.

Got this baby animal game also from the baby shower on HWTM put together by Elizabeth at Bump Smitten.  I used her water bottle printable last year for Gavin’s 4th Birthday party.  Elizabeth has some great ideas & inspiration on her site.

Chevron Striped Baby Shower Banner

Chevron Elephant Baby Banner

Today is the 2nd day of my spring break……Had a lovely morning run with friends at boot camp down to the shores of Lake Sammamish, the water was so still and peaceful.   Then a quick stop at Ben Franklin to get some cardstock for Gavin’s birthday party invites that I am working on finishing up.   I am really enjoying having some time off from the busy work days, many meetings and too much email.

I am excited to share a banner that I made to welcome my girlfriends new baby girl.  The banner is two pieces and reads “Welcome Baby Hope.”  It was one of the decorations for the Chevron Elephant Baby Shower and the expectant momma was thrilled to receive the sweet banner.

I used the silhouette to cut out the banner flags and letters.  It’s really easy when you have such a great tool to do all the hard work.

Chevron Elephant Baby Banner (1)a

To create the rectangle flags, I used the “build a banner set” file by Lori Whitlock from the Silhouette store.  I was excited to make a banner with this traditional banner flag shape.  My favorite part about making banners is that the shapes are endless and you can try a new style each time.   In the past I’ve made circle, triangle, rectangle, and heart shaped banners.

Here’s a view of the banner flags in the Silhouette Studio software, this size flag is just right to get two per 12×12 sheet.   The banners flags are 5×7 and the white pieces of cardstock are 5 x 2.75.

Chevron Banner

I printed the letters with black ink via my printer, cut the letters out with the Silhouette and then popped them up with foam to create dimension.  Lori Whitlock really thought about the purpose when creating the silhouette banner file, she made holes at the top so that it’s ready to be strung.  I love finding added shortcuts.   The font is 260pt and I kept enlarging it until it filled up the white strip as much as it could.    This might be my first time cutting out letters via the Silhouette and I am pleased with the result.  I love being able to use all the fonts on my computer, I have Over 1000 of them (I can hear Nicole saying “of course you do Laurel.”   Fonts are free & fun so it’s great to have options!   :)

Chevron Elephant Baby Banner (22)

The beautiful teal ribbon is my favorite part of the banner.  I got it at the local Ben Franklin (in Redmond) where they have a lovely supply of ribbons that can be cut to order.  I like the thickness (it’s larger than what I typically use), the two white stiches through the organza and the beautiful teal blue color.

Chevron Elephant Baby Banner (25)

The pink & red elephants look really great with these three chevron striped patterns.    I love the three hearts that are coming out of the mommas trunk.

The banner will be used to decorate the baby shower but then can also be hung in the baby’s room.   Banners are great gifts that can be used for room decorations for years to come.  I received two owl banners from at my baby shower and have have them hanging in Gwenyth’s room.  Now that she’s 1 1/2 she’s even noticing them and talking about them.    The first one says “Baby Gwen” and was ordered from Etsy for the shower, hung it above her crib but had to take it down when she turned one because she was trying to pull it off the wall.  The second one is a triangle shaped “Gwenyth” banner that’s up high above the closet doors so it’s safe from little hands.

I am in love with the pink, red, blue color combo.  The digital paper pack comes with two-toned chevron combos like I used on the invite and then these version with the color/white combo.

Chevron Elephant Baby Banner (12)

It was raining the day I finished the “welcome” portion of the banner so I was only able to get a full view of it all together here on the table.  Thank god that that Saturday was dry so that I could get the photos of the “baby hope” portion (seen above).   I like to get photos outside whenever possible to get the best light and it’s tough to do that in spring in Seattle.

Welcome to sweet Baby Hope!  We “hope” your arrival into the world is a memorable one.  I can’t wait to meet you!!

Soccer Birthday Party

Matthew's 2nd Birthday Party_Dec 2012 (47)

Who likes soccer balls and yummy cake?  If you answered “I do!” then you are going to enjoy  the fun birthday décor that my sister-in-law created for her son’s second birthday party.

The thing that amazed me the most about her creations is that she didn’t use a die-cut machine.  No silhouette or circuit (I think my brother needs to get her one asap!).  She made the banner and food signs by tracing shapes, using stencils to hand cut the letters and a little support from the computer.

Matthew's 2nd Birthday Party_Dec 2012 (5)v2

I don’t have the patience or skills to hand make all my stuff, this is why I’ve fallen so hard for my cameo.  It does all the difficult work.  Today I am going to show you that you can still make your own décor even without a personal die cut machine.

The banner was the focal part of the party setting the stage for the active soccer party.   The banner is so cute with the alternating colors, pattern and soccer shapes.  I love the how much the white letters pop on the dark backgrounds.    I can’t even imagine making this banner free handed.  GREAT job girl!

Here’s the birthday banner I made last year for the lil’ guys first monkey birthday party.

Here’s the custom photo invitation that includes two cute photos of the birthday boy playing soccer.

Moving on to the food….there was so many sweet treats served.  She made cute food tent signs that tied the menu to the soccer theme.

For the three bigger signs seen here in the pastries she used a scalloped circle hand punch to do the outer/inner circle.  I have some circle punches too and use them often.  If you like to make little signs, cupcake toppers, table décor, etc. I recommend having them in a variety of sizes/shapes.  EK Success punches are my favorite (seen here and here ).   I have a few other brands and wish they were all EK Success.

The birthday boy wore a custom monogramed shirt with his name, a big 2 and a soccer ball.  Very cute to have a party shirt made!  There are some beautiful designs on Etsy.

Elephant Baby Shower Invite

Elephant Baby Shower Invite - Laurel Lane Crafts (3)

Today I’d like to share a handmade invitation that I made for an upcoming baby shower.   The theme for the baby shower is elephants with chevron patterns.  The momma & baby girl elephant clip art files are so sweet, I am so glad that they are being used for this celebration!   As you all know, chevron patterns are on trend right now (in scrapbooking, fashion, & décor) and I love being able to incorporate them into the handmade decorations.  The three colors we are using for all the party are light pink, teal blue and red (see the digital papers below).

Elephant Baby Shower Invite - Laurel Lane Crafts (1)

I got the idea to use this beautiful shape for the main portion of the invitation from a great post on the Silhouette blog.  I had been playing around with the design, wanting to use the red chevron background but it’s a lot on it’s own.   I hadn’t figured out how to pull it all together until I saw this idea.   With the label shape on top of the pattern it peeks out but also lets the invitation body stand out.   Thank you Jeana for the idea & inspiration!

I printed the background chevron paper from digital files, designed the invite with the silhouette and popped up the blue banner baby shower flag (with pop dots).   Digital paper is fun for making party stuff because you can print as much as you need.

The momma elephant has three hearts coming out of her trunk, where I’ve added glitter glue for a little sparkle.  Thank you Michelle & Christine for helping me assemble the invites!

We’ve been busy creating a bunch of other cute & fun things for the baby shower.  I can’t wait to show you what I’ve been working on.  Or even tell you the things we are making, but I can’t say that either!  It won’t be for another month though because I want to surprise the expectant momma.  It’s hard for me to keep surprises though so this will be fun to see if I can actually do it.  Since she’s a fellow crafter it’s all that much harder to keep it quiet but surprising her on the big day will be worth it!

Scalloped Heart Banner

Heart Banner (15)

Here’s a simple DIY Valentine’s Day Heart banner that I made to celebrate February.  I was inspired by this pin on Pinterest of a BHG paper heart garland.   With the Silhouette I knew this would be a breeze to make.  I have a lot of valentines paper (waiting to be made into layouts) in my stash and used Cosmo Cricket (Chemistry collection) paper for this banner.

Heart Banner (21)

Here’s a quick summary of how I made it and let me say it was a quick project!  Cut the shapes & strung them together in just 30 minutes.    I used the 11 hearts shape found inn the Silhouette store by  Lori Whitlock.  Used just one of the hearts from the set and then made it about 3×3.

I then separated the two pieces and put the scalloped heart on one page.    Here’s what my pages look like in the Silhouette Studio.

Heart Banner

I put the standard heart on another sheet and made it even smaller so that the outside heart would have a good setback.

Heart Banner Inside

I cut 4 sheets each of the two hearts.   By making two separate cut files I made sure that all the hearts would be different patterns for the outside/inside pieces.  I love the fancy edge the scalloped shapes offer.

Heart Banner (1)

Heart Banner (2)

I was quickly done with the cutting and assembled my hearts together.  I recommend using double sided paper so that you can make more combinations.

Heart Banner (5)

Heart Banner (8)

As you can see, I hung the banner across our headboard to add a festive touch for February.  I am happy with how it turned out!  I love how easy it is to make banners and projects with the Silhouette.

Heart Banner (19)

It was really hard to photograph this banner hanging on the headboard. The light is super low right now since it’s winter makes it challenging.  These photos of the banner hanging don’t have the warmth that I normally like to convey, at least the photos of making the hearts (above) from my craft room are warm enough to show the full colors of the paper hearts.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you!! Hope you get to enjoy some sweet treats with your loved ones.

Great Outdoors Page Kit

Great Outdoors Adventure Layout - Scrapbook Generation Page Kit (2)

Here’s a quick layout I made with the Boy Crazy page kit from Scrapbook Generation.    I like using page kits from time to time to help get me closer to my goal of being caught up.  This boy crazy kit comes with everything you need to make the layout and even a sketch so you can do it again.    All you have to do is assemble!

The sketch outlined 5 photos but I wanted to add two more for a total of 7 photos.  I changed a 5×3.5 photo to a 2×3 (on the far right side with the three kids) and then added the two 2×2’s to the layout.  I like how many photos you can add to this layout and LONG title across the bottom.

Great Outdoors Adventure Layout - Scrapbook Generation Page Kit

This Take a Hike line is great for the camping trips & hikes in the mountains.  I used it for our camping trip from last summer and this might be the most recent event that I’ve scrapped.  If I go by my chronological list of pages to scrap I am working my way through 2011 now.

Great Outdoors Adventure Layout - Scrapbook Generation Page Kit (1)

I subscribed to some of the monthly SG kits during 2012.  I’ve stopped them now so that I can get through them all and also need to finish up with my stash.  I haven’t had to buy any paper or embellishments for layouts for quite some time (at least 6 months)!  I love all the new stuff out there after CHA but I am holing back till I actually need new supplies for layouts.  We have another scrapbook retreat weekend coming up soon and I am excited to get more layouts completed.

Mickey Mouse Birthday Party

Hi Laurel Lane fans!  My name is Shawna and I wanted to share with all of you the amazing work that Laurel did for my little boy’s second birthday party.  When it came time to plan the party, there was no question that I would want Laurel to help me make it perfect.  I got lots of ideas on Pinterest (link to my idea board) and Laurel helped me to make them even better!

Invitation:

I went for a photo invite that I found on Etsy and it came out so cute!

Mickey Mouse Birthday Party Invitation copy

The colors were primary colors taken from the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme (black, red, yellow, blue).  I got both solid and polka dot balloons and then some mylars to accent it all.

The front door sign was 3 circles and she used the Disney font. I loved the striped paper on the top and bottom circles.

Coopers 2nd Birthday Party_Aug 2012 (5)Coopers 2nd Birthday Party_Aug 2012 (13)

Here’s a summary of all the decorations Laurel made for the party:

  • Door Sign – (used Silhouette & Mickey shape from Cricut)
  • Favor Tags -(used circle punch & Mickey from Cricut)
  • Food Tents – (designed & printed with Silhouette)
  • Various Signs (designed & printed with Silhouette)
  • Birthday Banner (designed, printed and cut with Silhouette)
  • Water bottle Labels – (designed with Silhouette)

Note from Laurel: The door sign & food tents were inspired by items I saw on Etsy and knew it would be fun to make them myself.  For the rest of the signs I extended the same patterns I used for the handmade birthday banner.    I am pleased with how the signs turned out, it was quite fun to use the Mickey font.

Favors:

They were sitting by the door for people on the way out with a little sign that uses some of the well known Mickey Mouse clubhouse sayings of “Thanks for stopping by” and “See ya real soon!”

Note from Laurel: The text portion for the signs (white sheet of paper) was designed with my Silhouette software.  I used the same 3-border frame on the white paper with the black, yellow and red dot border across all of the paper pieces.  I showed some close ups of this from creating the banner (seen here), once it was designed for the banner it was so easy to extend to these other parts.

The yellow mickey print and the red polka dot background papers are from a digital pack of paper from Etsy.  I printed all of the sheets that I needed for these pieces on 12×12 sheets and then cut them down to the right size once I had the inside portion completed.

Coopers 2nd Birthday Party_Aug 2012 (21)_v2

I have done lots of different kinds of favors for parties and this time decided to do something that cost a little more, but felt like these crayon rolls might actually get used rather than end up in the garbage a few days later. I found them on Etsy from The Laughy Giraffy and what I loved about them is that, of course, they match the theme, but also because they have a rubber band closure rather than a ribbon tie. The elastic makes it much easer to wrap them up quickly and throw them back in your purse or diaper bag after a meal.  Laurel made an adorable thank you tag and I tied them on to each with a simple red ribbon.

Coopers 2nd Birthday Party_Aug 2012 (19)

Instead of party hats, we had Mickey ears.  Playing again on the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, we had a sign that used the familiar line of “We’ve got ears, say cheers.”

Note from Laurel: I used pop dots to raise the mickey heads on the sign.  The black mickey die cuts (from the Cricket) sure were great embellishments to add to these fun signs.

Decorations:

I made a bunch of circles & Mickey Mouse heads with the Cricut.  This includes the saying or phrase that’s in the inside, which were all from different characters in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  They were hung from the ceiling with some cute spiral strings that I got at Party City.  I hung some inside from the ceiling and then some outside from the umbrella and swing set.  They were very festive and added a nice extra touch of the theme to the party.

Birthday Banner:

Laurel made an adorably banner that I hung from the roofline on the back deck.  She used a bunch of different papers from the Mickey digital pack, along with the block Disney font. It looked great outside, especially since it was a great warm summer day.

Here’s the post where she talks about making the triangle banner with the Silhouette.

Food:

I went for themed food for the party, which I have never done before, but ended up loving it!  They were all kid friendly and the names from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  These were inspired by something I found on Pinterest.

Note from Laurel: I designed the food tents with the Silhouette software.   Used the striped digital pattern as the background and then added the frame on the top of the pattern.  Then printed the sheet and cut apart the tents.  The striped pattern is on the front side and runs across the back as well.  Here’s another place I was able to use the cute Mickey Mouse font (you can download from many font sites for free). I was able to fit three tents on each 12×12 piece of paper.

Drink Labels:

I have done water bottle labels before and thought it was so cute.  This time I had Laurel do both water bottle and juice box labels and they were so cute!  She printed them on some thicker, glossy paper that helped so the color didn’t run as easily when they were in the ice bucket.

Note from Laurel: Used the digital papers here again to create the labels.  For the Mickey head I took it off one of the digital sheets of paper and added it to the design.

Also added the same 3-piece border around the inside of the white circle. You can see it best in this second photo.  I thought it was so creative that Shawna wanted to do juice boxes!  They looked great and the kids loved them.    I love polka dots so these labels were fun to make.

Note from Laurel:  I had so much fun making these paper items for Cooper’s party.  Shawna is a GREAT hostess and throws amazing parties.  She’s one of those people that thinks about everything the guests will need to be comfortable.  Everyone has a great time at parties where the environment is so comfortable.  I enjoyed making everything and even more love that she’s appreciates everything so much.    Shawna also hosted an Owl baby shower for me and baby Gwen a few years ago, I plan to share some photos from that day soon.

Here’s a layout that I made while on holiday break.  This was another fun one to make with Nordic Holiday collection.   The snowmen paper and chipboard accents are so adorable!

I used one of Allison Davis’ two-page sketches.   I’ve followed the sketch mostly but squeezed in one more vertical 4×6 to include 6 of my favorite photos from this afternoon.

The green & red color combo seemed to go well with Gavin’s jacket.  What a fun time he had playing in the snow.  I hope we’ll get some snow this year, so far nothing!

After taking these photos I think that the area around the big snowman looks empty.   I’m planning to add some red crystals stickers to add a little more color around the snowman & hearts.

I’ve said it before but I just love all the sweater like patterns in this line.  These hearts are my favorite, love the needle point detail!    This makes 6 layouts I’ve done with the Nordic Holiday collection.  I am done for now but I do have a bit more supplies left so I will try to make 1 or 2 more with Nordic Holiday when I get back to holiday layouts.

Winter Wishes Layout

Today I’d like to show you another holiday layout.  This two page layout is based of a sketch from Sketches for Scrapbooking vol 5 (Allison Davis).  Thank you once again Allison for the inspiration.

The background paper follows the sketch but I’ve changed a bunch of other stuff.  The sketch had 7 photos and here I’ve only used 4.  I decided to enlarge the photo on the left page to 5×7 because I was only putting one on this page (instead of 5).  I do like the times where  I can have a larger photo on a layout.    I don’t think I’ve ever done a layout where I just have one tiny wallet sized photo.  I love seeing layouts where people can do this but I love my photos too much to ever go this reduced!

I’ve used Basic Grey’s Nordic Holiday collection once again for this layout.  It’s the 5th layout I’ve created with this collection.   Here’s a link to the other Nordic Holiday layouts.

If you do a lot of scrapbooking or card making, I highly encourage you to buy the collections.  I find that I get more use out of these supplies because you have all the paper choices, tons of embellishments and color options.  Not all companies sell everything in a package together but I always look at what’s available when making a purchase to ensure I get the right stuff.    As I am writing this I am reminded of my closet and how I like to do this with clothes.  If I like a shirt I might want to get it in 2 or 3 colors.  Right Nicole?!  If something is comfy I figure why not fully enjoy it!   I guess I don’t differ that much in my scrapbooking shopping approach either.

I added these lovely felt ornaments to both sides since I didn’t put a photo in this spot.    The two blue ornaments are my favorite!  They are so soft and give the feeling of warmth on these cold days.

After this post, I just have one more layout to share from this collection. It’s my favorite one so I can’t wait to show you!
