Today I am excited to take part in the ScrapbookSteals August blog hop. I’ve made some cards and a scrapbook layout to share with you. You should be coming here from Dana Tartar’s blog, if you’d like to start from the top of the blog hop list visit Scrapbook Steals for the link to the start. There are fun prizes to be won!
For this project we were each sent a particular scrapbooking supplies from Scrapbook Steals to use in a project. I am thrilled to be able to introduce you to Mr. Huey’s Color Mists by Studio Calico. This is an amazing product that you are going to LOVE having in your scrapbook supply closet (if you don’t already)!
I was received a pinkish/reddish color called Boss Lady Rose Patronne. Here’s a picture of the spray.
The first thing I did was do some research to figure out how to use the color mists. I have not tried them before and I am so glad that I was introduced to color mist (finally!). I decided that it would be fun to use the wood veneer shapes (butterfly & stars) also by Studio Calico to show the power of the color mists. You could also use die cuts from your punches, masks and really any shape as the item that you mist.

Card #1-A Tiny Bird with a Big Song
For this card I arranged 4 butterflies and then misted the entire sheet of paper. I wanted to highlight the negative space that’s created by using the mist. The large size of the butterflies makes the background stand out.
After doing the spraying, I wasn’t sure how I’d use the pink misted portion of the paper with the butterflies and I was thrilled when I found some paper that matched the pink almost exactly! Then I trimmed the pink panel down to be part of this 5×7 card and added two strips of pattern paper. The supplies for these first two cards are actually from a past ScrapbookSteal purchase (My Minds Eye-Follow Your Heart Collection). I love that there was a butterfly button in the MME collection to add to the butterfly theme going on with the wood shapes.
The fun part about misting is the unevenness of the spray. On the left bottom side of the card and the right side it’s not evenly colored and it gives the paper a nice handmade/antique look.
This card is smaller than the first so I used only two butterfly silhouettes and for the third I used an embellishment. The entire pink part was created with the mist spray. I was excited to use the shiny pearl brads in the middle of the butterflies. Spraying the paper & the butterflies was a really beautiful process and plan to do another post showing some of the step by step photos.
Card #3-Hooray for You
I used the same Boss Lady mist here but you can see when the mist is applied to the wood it’s darker than on the paper above. It is almost red here. It was really easy to spray the wood and the color absorbs quickly. Once the shapes were dry I glued them to the front of this card to create dimensional card.
After seeing the red mist I knew I’d like to try a few others so I decided to use Buttercup and Heirloom Blue. Having a few colors will give you the opportunity to mix the colors as I have done on this next set of projects.
Card #4- Thanks a Million
I sprayed the butterflies and when they dried stacked them on top of each other to add to the front of this card. They create a nice effect when combined together like this. I was excited to find some paper (Cosmo Cricket Social Club) in my stash that would work well with these colors.
Card #5 – Just a Note
For the next card I wanted to use all three colors together so I started with the blue, then added the yellow and pink. I love how the colors mix and you see there’s even some green where the blue & yellow mixed.
Card #6 – I Love Remembering
For this last card I did the same thing as the card above but this time I wanted to keep the wood veneer butterfly in place on the front of this card. There’s a nice white outline around the wood after you spray and it creates a fun effect to make them pop out. If you make a mistake and have to start over while spraying you can flip the wood shapes over and use the other side. Each item created will never be the same as another!
Layout – I’m a Big Brother Now
Last I’d like to share a two page scrapbook layout. I used two page sketch #15 found at Sketch Support for this layout. Originally I wanted to use a masking template (studio calico bubbles or circle graph) that creates a background but I had a hard time figuring out how to make it work on a layout. I didn’t want it to overpower all the patterns in the papers. I think the masks are great for cards because then I can control the size/shape better. However, I do hope to find a layout where I can try them with other patterns too.
In order to use the color mist in this layout I sprayed the wood veneer stars and glued them to the bottom edge of the pattern paper. I love when you can take embellishments (wood stars) from one collection and mix them with a totally different collection such as this Amy Tangerine star/stripe paper & thickers (Get Around, Work In Progress, Stars Stripes & Stiches). The wood stars vary in size and are close to the same size as the stars on the pattern paper. I thought they created a nice border and tied in well with the “big brother” pajamas the boys are wearing. One last thing I went back and forth about was spraying random blue mist spots across the bottom wave of the white paper. What do you think? Should I add more mist to this layout?
Thanks for coming to Laurel Lane, taking the time to read through and view my projects! I hope you’ll give these awesome Mr. Huey’s color mists by Studio Calico a try. There are so many possibilities! One of the thing I like the most is the size, they are nice & compact. After making a few projects you can use up the bottle giving you room to try other colors.
